94. Is there any link between the words "indus" and industry?

Jonathan Mark Kenoyer
No. The word Indus comes from the word Sindhu, which is the name of the river that flows through the region.

Above: Industries courtesy GIDSS. The first use of the word "industry" is said by Merriam-Webster to be the 15th century, and is rooted in the Middle English (Scots) industrie, from Middle French, from Latin industria, from industrius diligent, from Old Latin indostruus, perhaps from indu in + -struus (akin to Latin struere to build).
